The Orpheus House

One of the most elaborate private houses in the city. The house, dating from the 3rd-4th centuries A.D., features colorful mosaic floor panels. One of the most striking depictions, which was found in the triclinium, or dining hall of the house, is that of Orpheus, the divine mythological musician, playing a stringed instrument. His music pacifies the wild animals and birds seen around him. Other scenes in the same room depict everyday Roman life of the period. The owner of the house was undoubtedly one of the town's wealthiest residents.
