Saffuriyya (Sepphoris) History
The example of Saffuriyya is self-revealing. Some ill-disposed writers speak about the antiquity of the city that from a preconceived Idea that tries solely to confirm an imaginary religious background, while ignoring its past multicultural, Cananéen, Aramaean, Greek, Hasmonaeans, Roman, Byzantine and Arab. Such a distortion of history has for an objective to present Saffuriyya as the city of only one religious community. These writers forget that it is' difficult to assign the history of the city to only one religious community, because the ancient inhabitants of the city were Saffurians before being Christians, Jewish, pagans or of another religious community. The historic texts tell us that the Jewish Saffurienses (as the other Galileans) made part of the Ituréenses and Aramaeans who converted to the Judaism under the domination of the Hasmonaeans, became Christians during the 4th and 5th century, convert then in Islam at the time of the Arab era. The oral heritage of Saffurians (today, exilees) and their popular religious beliefs and their feasts, as Al-Khader "holy Georges", Thursday of the deaths and Nabi Moussa, recall their roots and their inheritance, they have the tendency to be protéiformes and interdenominational. The Saffurianses are proud of this inheritance, of the inheritances of all religious communities. Even as Moslems they are proud that the Mishna has been written in Saffuriyya (Sepphoris), proud that this city was the one of Anne and Joachim, parents of Marie. Then why travesty the history of Saffuriyya (Sepphoris)? The goal of these writings is to justify the expulsion of the Palestinians and Saffurians from their land… the reasoning is simple" if the inheritance and the history of Saffuriyya (Sepphoris) doesn't belong to the Saffurians, this land doesn't belong to them! "
